Rugby
Rugby is a sport mired in history and camaraderie, and steeped
in tradition. Dating back to the early 1800's, a young man named
William Webb Ellis "
having a complete disregard for
the rules of the game, picked up the ball and ran with it
"
This quote refers to the founder of the modern game of Rugby,
who, while playing in a football (soccer) game at Rugby School
in England, picked up the ball and ran it into the goal. While
his teammates laughed and applauded, the other team took great
offense and chased after Ellis intent on letting their feelings
be known. Thus, Rugby was formed.
Valley Christian Schools' first ever Rugby team began practicing
in the Fall of 2002. The VCS rugby club is a member of the Skyhawk
Division (U19 High School) of the Northern California Rugby Football
Union (NCRFU). There are a total of 9 high school teams in the
Skyhawk Division, which makes for a competitive season of great
Rugby.
Practice schedules will be announced in October. Our practice
field is Great Oaks Park, not far from the Skyway campus.
Players of all skill levels are welcome, and no experience is
necessary. Players will be taught the basics of this gentlemen's
game, in a structured and progressive manner. Skills will be developed
comprehensively throughout the season, allowing for maximum growth
and development.
